Information About Our Maths Curriculum
At Helmshore, we believe the development of mathematics is essential for children’s future success in education and life. The development of mathematical skills, knowledge and concepts, especially through practical activities are central to our approach.
Children will acquire the ability to solve mathematical problems, understand and use measures, make estimates and check their work. Pupils will apply their geometric and algebraic understanding, and relate their understanding of probability to the notions of risk and uncertainty. They will also understand the cycle of collecting, presenting and analysing data. They will be taught to apply their mathematics to both routine and non-routine problems, including breaking down more complex problems into a series of simpler steps.
During their problem solving activities, pupils will be involved in collaborative teamwork, enabling them to develop important social, behavioural, moral, spiritual and cultural skills alongside their mathematical skills.
Children will be given a repertoire of mental strategies to aid their working out of calculations. Written methods for the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are taught and developed throughout school. We ensure there is an appropriate balance between mental and written calculations.
We aim to develop a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics and the ability to think clearly and logically.
We recognise that there are widely different abilities throughout the school and we use a variety of methods to ensure suitable learning opportunities for all pupils, matching the challenge of the task to the ability of SEN, Pupil Premium and Gifted and Talented children.
Regular assessments, both formal and informal, are used to inform planning and next step targets and ensure that all children are making progress and achieving their potential.
